Italian Footwear Heritage. South African Design and Manufacturing.
Founded in 2022 and based in George, Western Cape, Smerilli Design Manufacturing combines a family footwear heritage from Monte Urano, Italy, with more than twenty years of professional experience in South Africa.
We support brands, designers and entrepreneurs through the development and manufacturing of footwear, leather goods and related products, helping transform ideas into practical, production-ready solutions.
Our Story
The story of Smerilli Design Manufacturing begins in Monte Urano, in the Marche region of central Italy.
Monte Urano forms part of one of Italy’s most established footwear districts, where generations of craftspeople, designers and manufacturers have developed specialist knowledge in shoemaking and product construction.
The Smerilli family’s connection to the footwear industry dates back to the 1950s. This background created a strong foundation of practical knowledge, attention to detail and respect for the processes behind a well-made product.
That heritage later travelled with Alfonso Smerilli to South Africa.
Meet the Founder
Alfonso Smerilli is the founder and driving force behind Smerilli Design Manufacturing.
With roots in the Italian footwear district of Monte Urano and more than two decades of experience in South Africa, Alfonso brings together two distinct but complementary perspectives: the technical culture of Italian shoemaking and a practical understanding of the South African production landscape.
Throughout his career, his work has received recognition through design awards, reflecting his ability to combine technical expertise, functionality and considered product design.
His approach is based on direct involvement, problem-solving and close collaboration with clients, designers, technicians and manufacturers.
For Alfonso, product development is not limited to creating an attractive design. It also requires a thorough understanding of construction, materials, fit, functionality, production methods and the product’s intended purpose.
What We Do
Smerilli Design Manufacturing supports footwear and leather goods projects from initial concept through to development and production.
