FOOTWEAR LAST DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA

The shoe last is the technical foundation of every footwear project. It determines the shape, internal volume, proportions and fit of the finished product, influencing both its visual character and its performance.

Smerilli Design Manufacturing supports designers, brands and entrepreneurs through the footwear last development process, helping translate a creative concept into a technically considered foundation for prototyping and production.


By evaluating the intended footwear category, construction, materials, target fit and final use, we help establish a last that supports both the design vision and the practical requirements of the product.

WHY THE SHOE LAST MATTERS

Every part of a footwear design is developed around the last.


The toe shape, heel position, internal volume, topline, upper proportions and relationship with the sole are all influenced by its geometry. 


Even a visually strong design can encounter fitting or construction problems when the last has not been selected or developed appropriately.

A carefully considered last creates a more reliable starting point for upper development, sole development and prototyping. It also helps identify potential technical issues before the project moves further into sampling or production.

LAST DEVELOPMENT BUILT AROUND THE PRODUCT

There is no universal last suitable for every type of footwear.


Each project requires different proportions, volumes and technical characteristics according to the product being developed. Before recommending a development route, we consider:


  • the footwear category and intended use;
  • the target fit and internal volume;
  • toe shape and overall proportions;
  • heel height, pitch and stance;
  •  upper design and pattern requirements;
  • construction method;
  • sole and component compatibility;
  • upper, lining and reinforcement materials;
  • aesthetic direction and brand identity;
  • prototype and production requirements.


This product-specific approach helps create a stronger connection between the original design, the physical prototype and the finished footwear.

OUR LAST DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

PROJECT REVIEW

We begin by reviewing the design, reference images, technical drawings or existing samples provided by the client.

At this stage, we consider the intended product, its aesthetic direction, construction and functional requirements. This allows us to identify the key characteristics the last will need to support.


TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

The proportions and technical requirements of the last are defined according to the footwear category, intended fit, materials, sole construction and final use.

Particular attention is given to the relationship between the shape of the last and the structure of the proposed upper.


LAST SELECTION OR DEVELOPMENT

Depending on the project, we assess whether an existing last can provide a suitable starting point or whether adjustments or a more specific development route are required.

The objective is not simply to create an attractive shape, but to establish a technically workable foundation for the complete product.


PROTOTYPE EVALUATION

The last is ultimately evaluated through the physical development of the footwear prototype.

This stage allows the design, proportions, fit, construction and interaction between the upper, last and sole to be assessed together.

Where necessary, technical adjustments can be identified before the project progresses towards production.

EXISTING LASTS AND PROJECT-SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT

Not every project requires the development of a completely new last.


In some cases, an existing shape may provide an appropriate technical base and can be selected according to the footwear category and design requirements. In other cases, proportions, volume or specific areas may need to be reviewed to support the intended product.


Smerilli Design Manufacturing helps clients understand which route is most appropriate for the project, considering technical requirements, development stage, expected quantities and available resources.

FROM CREATIVE CONCEPT TO TECHNICAL FOUNDATION

A footwear sketch communicates the appearance and identity of a design, but it does not define every three-dimensional requirement of the finished product.


Last development helps translate the two-dimensional concept into a physical structure around which the upper, components and sole can be developed.

This stage creates the bridge between creative direction and technical execution, helping the project move towards a prototype that can be reviewed, refined and prepared for manufacturing.

To help us evaluate your last development requirements, provide as much of the following information as possible:


  • footwear sketches or technical drawings;
  • reference images;
  • the type of footwear you intend to develop;
  • preferred toe shape and overall proportions;
  • target customer or intended fit;
  • planned construction method;
  • sole references or existing components;
  • preferred upper and lining materials;
  • existing lasts, samples or prototypes;
  • expected production quantities;
  • preferred project timeline.


You do not need to have every technical detail resolved before contacting us.

FROM LAST DEVELOPMENT TO PROTOTYPING

Once the appropriate last direction has been established, the project can move into upper development, component assessment and prototyping.

The prototype brings the different elements together, allowing the footwear to be evaluated as a complete physical product before preparation for production.
