TESTING DESIGN, FIT AND CONSTRUCTION

A footwear prototype transforms a design concept into a physical product that can be examined, tested and refined.


It brings together the last, upper pattern, sole, materials, components and construction method, allowing the complete design to be evaluated before preparation for production.

Our objective is not simply to create a visual sample, but to develop a prototype that provides useful technical information for the next stage of the project.

WHY PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT MATTERS

A drawing or digital rendering can communicate the appearance of a footwear design, but it cannot fully demonstrate how the product will fit, behave or respond to manufacturing.


The prototype makes it possible to evaluate the design as a three-dimensional object.

It helps reveal potential issues relating to proportions, fit, material behaviour, pattern construction, component compatibility and assembly before larger quantities are considered.

Identifying these matters during development can reduce unnecessary alterations, delays and material waste later in the process.

PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT BUILT AROUND THE PRODUCT

Every prototype must be developed according to the specific characteristics of the intended footwear.

Before recommending a development route, we consider:


  • the footwear category and intended use;
  • the design and visual direction;
  • the selected last and target fit;
  • the upper pattern and construction;
  • sole and component compatibility;
  • upper, lining and reinforcement materials;
  • stitching, edge finishing and assembly details;
  • performance and functional requirements;
  • available components and production methods;
  • expected production quantities;
  • project timeline and stage of development.


This product-specific approach allows the prototype to provide more meaningful information than a purely visual sample.

OUR PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

PROJECT REVIEW


We begin by reviewing the footwear sketches, technical drawings, reference images, material specifications or existing samples provided by the client.

At this stage, we assess the intended product, design direction, construction, materials and current level of technical development.

This helps identify which elements are already defined and which may require further evaluation before the first prototype is produced.


TECHNICAL PREPARATION


The design is reviewed in relation to the selected last, sole, upper structure and intended construction method.

Patterns, components, materials and assembly requirements may need to be considered before physical development begins.

The purpose of this stage is to create a technically workable basis for the prototype while remaining as faithful as possible to the original design direction.


MATERIAL AND COMPONENT SELECTION


Materials and components influence the appearance, structure, flexibility and performance of the finished footwear.

Depending on the project, this may include the evaluation of:


  • upper and lining materials;
  • reinforcements and internal components;
  • soles, midsoles and insoles;
  • fastenings, eyelets and hardware;
  • threads and stitching specifications;
  • padding and comfort components;
  • colours, finishes and surface treatments.


Where the final production material is not yet available, an appropriate development material may be used to assess construction and proportions.


FIRST PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT


The initial prototype brings the principal elements of the design together as a physical product.

This stage allows the overall shape, proportions, construction and interaction between components to be reviewed.

The first prototype should be treated as a development tool rather than automatically considered the final approved product.


TECHNICAL EVALUATION


Once the prototype has been completed, it can be examined in relation to the project requirements.

Depending on the type of footwear, the review may consider:

overall proportions and design accuracy;

fit and internal volume;

upper pattern and topline;

material behaviour;

sole and last compatibility;

construction and assembly;

flexibility and structure;

stitching and finishing;

component placement;

manufacturing feasibility.


The evaluation helps identify which elements should be retained and which require further adjustment.


REVISIONS AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT


Prototype development may require more than one physical iteration.

Adjustments can be made according to the issues identified during the review, the client’s feedback and the technical requirements of the product.

The number and nature of the revisions will depend on the complexity of the design, the condition of the original specifications and the results of each development stage.

WHAT CAN BE EVALUATED THROUGH A PROTOTYPE

A footwear prototype can help evaluate several connected aspects of the product.


DESIGN AND PROPORTIONS

The physical sample shows whether the shape, lines, panels, volume and sole profile reflect the intended visual direction.


FIT AND INTERNAL VOLUME

The relationship between the last, pattern, materials and internal components can be reviewed to identify possible fitting issues.


MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR

Leather, textiles, linings and reinforcement materials may stretch, crease, compress or respond differently once assembled.


CONSTRUCTION

The prototype helps determine whether the selected construction method is technically appropriate for the design and materials.


COMPONENT COMPATIBILITY

Soles, insoles, hardware, fastenings and other components must work correctly with the upper and the intended assembly process.


MANUFACTURING FEASIBILITY

The physical sample can reveal details that may be difficult, inefficient or inconsistent to reproduce during production.

DEVELOPMENT PROTOTYPE AND APPROVED SAMPLE

The first prototype should not automatically be treated as the final reference for manufacturing.

A development prototype is created to test and refine the product. It may contain temporary materials, alternative components or technical details that still require adjustment.


An approved sample represents a later stage in which the principal design, construction, materials and finishing requirements have been reviewed and accepted.


Clear approval of the relevant sample is essential before the product moves towards production preparation.

MATERIALS FOR PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT

Whenever possible, the prototype should be developed using materials and components that are representative of the intended product.


However, availability, minimum quantities, lead times or development costs may sometimes make it necessary to use alternative materials during an early prototype stage.

Where substitutions are required, these should be identified clearly so that the client understands which characteristics of the prototype are representative of the final product and which remain provisional.

  • footwear sketches or technical drawings;
  • reference images or design presentations;
  • the type and intended use of the footwear;
  • the selected last or available last information;
  • sole references or existing sole components;
  • upper patterns or technical files, when available;
  • preferred upper, lining and reinforcement materials;
  • colour and finishing specifications;
  • construction details;
  • logos, labels and branding requirements;
  • existing prototypes or physical samples;
  • target fit and size information;
  • estimated production quantities;
  • preferred project timeline.


You do not need to have every technical detail resolved before contacting us.

FROM PROTOTYPE TO PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT

Once the prototype has been reviewed and the principal technical details have been approved, the project can move towards production development.


This next stage focuses on preparing the product for more consistent manufacturing by reviewing materials, components, construction details, specifications and quality requirements.

The transition should take place only after the relevant prototype or sample has been formally reviewed and approved.
