FOOTWEAR & LEATHER GOODS PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

FROM CONCEPT TO A PRODUCT READY FOR MANUFACTURING

Strong product development connects creative intent with technical reality.

Smerilli Design Manufacturing supports brands, designers and businesses through the practical development of footwear and leather goods, from early concepts and technical review to prototyping, refinement and preparation for manufacturing.

We help determine what has already been resolved, what still requires development and which next steps are appropriate for the intended product.

DISCUSS YOUR PRODUCT

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT BUILT AROUND YOUR PROJECT

Every product brings its own technical and commercial requirements. A sneaker, boot, formal shoe, bag or accessory cannot be developed through a single standard formula.

We consider the design direction, intended use, construction, fit, materials, components, expected quantities and current condition of the project before recommending a development route.

Our objective is to preserve the identity and purpose of the design while addressing the practical requirements that will influence how the product is made.

Not every project requires every development service. The appropriate route depends on what has already been established, the complexity of the product and the level of technical work still required.

PROJECTS CAN BEGIN AT DIFFERENT STAGES

A project does not need to arrive as a complete technical package. SDM can assess the information currently available and help identify the most appropriate development stage.

EARLY CONCEPT

The project may begin with an idea, sketch, design presentation or collection of visual references.

At this stage, we help identify the principal technical questions that must be considered before physical development begins.

PARTIALLY DEVELOPED DESIGN

Some elements may already be established, while others — such as the last, sole, patterns, construction, materials or components — still require further evaluation.

We review how these elements relate to one another and identify the work required to move the project forward.

EXISTING PROTOTYPE

A client-owned or authorised prototype may be assessed to identify issues involving proportions, fit, construction, materials, component compatibility, finishing or manufacturing feasibility.

The condition of the prototype and the available technical information will help determine the next development steps.

PREPARATION FOR MANUFACTURING

An approved design or prototype may still require clearer specifications, confirmed materials and components, size information, quality references or a pre-production review.

Production development helps establish a more reliable connection between the approved product and its intended manufacturing route.

FOOTWEAR DEVELOPMENT STAGES

Footwear development commonly involves four connected areas. Depending on the project, these stages may overlap, require further evaluation or begin from an existing technical foundation.

Leather goods follow a product-specific route centred on pattern and construction development, material and hardware selection, prototyping, sampling and production preparation.

LAST DEVELOPMENT

The shoe last establishes the three-dimensional foundation of the footwear. It influences shape, internal volume, proportions and fit, as well as the relationship between the upper and sole.

SDM can help assess whether an existing last provides a suitable starting point or whether a more project-specific development route is required.

EXPLORE LAST DEVELOPMENT

SOLE DEVELOPMENT

The sole must work correctly with the selected last, upper structure, construction method and intended use of the footwear.

Sole development may involve assessing an existing unit, reviewing material and construction options or determining whether a more customised solution is appropriate.

EXPLORE SOLE DEVELOPMENT

PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT

A prototype brings the principal elements of the design together as a physical product that can be examined, tested and refined.

It allows proportions, fit, materials, construction and component compatibility to be evaluated before the product moves towards production preparation. The first prototype should be treated as a development tool rather than automatically considered the final approved sample.

EXPLORE PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT

PRE-PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT

Once the prototype has been reviewed and approved, the project can move towards pre-production development and preparation for manufacturing.

This stage may involve confirming materials, components, patterns, size requirements, construction details, finishes, quality expectations and other technical information required for more consistent production.

EXPLORE PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT

FROM PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TO MANUFACTURING

Product development and manufacturing are closely connected, but they are not interchangeable.

Development establishes, tests and refines the product. Manufacturing can begin once the design, fit, materials, components, construction details and quality requirements have been sufficiently defined, reviewed and approved.

Even after prototype approval, the proposed production route must be assessed in relation to the intended size range, quantities, material and component availability, tooling requirements, supplier conditions, manufacturing capacity and commercial feasibility.

Where a project is technically and commercially suitable, SDM can support the transition from an approved product to manufacturing.

DEVELOP YOUR PRODUCT WITH SDM

Tell us what you are developing, the current stage of the project and the support you require.

Our team will review the available information and, where the project appears suitable, help identify the most appropriate next step.

Product development, pattern engineering, tooling, prototyping and sampling are professional services and are quoted separately from production. All projects remain subject to technical and commercial assessment.
