Nubuck is produced by carefully buffing the grain side of the hide to raise a fine, short nap. This creates a soft, matt and tactile surface while retaining the density and structure associated with the outer layer of the leather.
Its appearance responds naturally to touch, brushing and changing light, producing subtle tonal variations that give the material depth and character.
Selected according to thickness, structure, flexibility, finish and intended use, nubuck may be suitable for footwear, bags and other leather goods where a refined surface and distinctive tactile quality are required.
The grain side of the leather is carefully buffed to create a short, fine nap. The resulting surface feels smooth and tactile while maintaining a denser character than many split leathers.
Responsive nap and tonal movement
The direction of the nap changes when the leather is brushed or handled. This can make the colour appear lighter or darker and creates the subtle two-tone effect associated with nubuck.
Nubuck and suede both have a napped surface, but they are produced differently. Nubuck is buffed on the grain side, while suede is commonly produced from the flesh side or a split.Nubuck therefore often has a finer nap and a denser, more structured character. Actual performance will depend on the hide, thickness, tannage and finish.
Depending on its specification, nubuck may be soft and flexible or more substantial and structured. The appropriate option should be selected according to the footwear category, construction method, last, lining, reinforcement requirements and intended use.
Nubuck may be considered for sneakers, casual shoes, loafers, boots, bags, panels, trims and selected accessories. Its suitability should always be evaluated in relation to expected wear, construction requirements and the performance required from the finished product.
The open, buffed surface can show handling marks and may absorb moisture, oils and dirt more readily than heavily coated leather.Protective treatments and cleaning products may alter the colour or direction of the nap and should therefore be tested on a sample before wider application.
Natural surface character
Differences in shade, nap, grain pattern and natural markings may occur within the same hide and between separate hides or production batches. These variations contribute to the character of genuine nubuck but should be considered during material grading, cutting and quality approval.
Smerilli Design Manufacturing supports designers, brands and manufacturers in selecting nubuck leather for footwear development, prototyping and leather goods production.
To help us assess your requirements, please provide the intended product, preferred colour and finish, approximate thickness, required quantity, sample requirements and delivery location.
Material availability, minimum order quantities, lead times and commercial conditions depend on tannery stock, supplier requirements and the specifications of the project.
Nubuck is a natural, napped leather. Differences in colour, nap direction, grain, texture and surface markings may occur between hides, production batches and different areas of the same hide.
Brushing, handling and the direction of light can make the same colour appear lighter or darker. Photography, image processing, screen brightness and display settings may create further differences between website images and the physical leather.
Natural markings, tonal movement and variations in surface character are not necessarily defects. Their acceptability depends on the intended product and agreed quality requirements.
Where colour, thickness, structure, nap or finish is critical, please request and approve a physical sample before prototyping, cutting or production.
